IV.Basic Truths.

Before we look at the answers Jesus gave His disciples as He taught them in Matthew 24 (repeated in Mark 13 and Luke 21), let us all consider and agree to the following unquestionable truths:

  1. The entire scripture must be accepted and believed totally, that it is the inspired Word of God, and cannot be challenged.  If we can add and subtract, as we desire, we have absolutely no basis for any of our beliefs. (II Timothy 3:16-17, 16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.)
  2. The Olivet discourse, as recorded by Matthew, Mark and Luke, was likely written at different times and each, most likely, did not have access to the other’s manuscripts.  There is no contradiction in the events they wrote about, which is the result of the Holy Spirit recalling to each what Jesus taught, did, and told them regarding what they should write. (John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.)
  3. The seventieth week of Daniel, as described in the Book of Daniel, is accurate and universally accepted, and its authenticity cannot be questioned.  Sixty- nine weeks of the prophesied seventy weeks were completed when the Messiah was cut off, or when Jesus was crucified. (Daniel 9:25-26, 25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the command to restore and build Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince, there shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublesome times. 26 And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself; and the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end of it shall be with a flood, and till the end of the war desolations are determined.)  The prophet Daniel wrote that the city (Jerusalem), and the sanctuary (temple), would be destroyed by the people of the prince. This destruction happened in A.D. 70.
  4. All of this is being revealed to Daniel from God and Jesus and through the angel Gabriel. (Daniel 7:13 “I was watching in the night visions, and behold, One like the son of Man, coming with the clouds of heaven! He came to the ancient of Days, and they brought Him near before Him.”)  Furthermore, it is told to Daniel that this prince (Antichrist) shall confirm, or strengthen, a covenant with many (Israel, or Israel and it’s warring neighbors), and that this prince would guarantee this peace agreement, which was perhaps already in existence, for seven years, and then would break this peace covenant in the midst of the seven years (middle, 3½ years). (Daniel 9:27Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; but in the middle of the week He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, even until the consummation, which is determined, is poured out on the desolate.)  At that time, the oblation (offerings) of the Jews would cease in the temple, and through abominations (evil deeds), the Antichrist would make the temple desolate (a ruin, as for Jewish worship).  He will set himself up as the only god to be worshipped in the Jewish temple, and every temple and church on earth.  To understand and believe this as God’s teaching is critical.
